Bulgarian SSR 85: Prob w/poly mags?

I got one of these from an online dealer, and it came with one 30 rd. poly magazine. However, I can't get the thing to seat. Regular AK mags fit fine, but the poly won't lock into place. Anyone have any similar experiences or advice? Thanks!

I've had the same problem with my Romanian AK. Do a search (google maybe) for AK polymag problems and you should find some ideas. Also, Search GIM for the same thing. I started a thread a long time ago but do not have time right now to look it up.

Tight in the front or won't lock up at the rear latch? Maybe a little sandpaper or light file work on the mag. They typically are a snug fit in most AKs at first, then they wear in and loosen up a bit. BTW I have a new Lancaster AK that will not even begin to take a Bulgarian waffle mag...they may take a bit of fitting to work, but really not a problem.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I've done a Google and GIM search, but I guess I haven't hit the right words on the search.

SC, it won't latch on the rear. I've got some steel AK mags, and they fit fine. And I tried the poly on my old WASR-10, and it worked! So at least I can use the thing for something besides a paperweight!

WASR-10s used to be single-stack only and the magwells were later hogged out to accept 30 round mags. They usually have more generous magwell dimensions...

Check to see if the mags are binding on the sides and not allowing the poly mag to swing all the way up to the latch. The mags should have some scuff marks on the sides. If that is the case, you might take off a little material where they rub with sandpaper or a file, as previously mentioned.
